We’ve all seen it. There’s one birthday cake in the dramatic play center… and suddenly everyone needs the birthday cake. 🎂

Now imagine replacing some of that very specific play food with a basket of pinecones. One child decides they’re cupcakes. Another is making soup. Someone else is serving ice cream. And there are plenty to go around.

That’s the beauty of materials that do less. When a toy already tells a child exactly what it is, there are only so many ways to use it. But when we offer simple, open-ended materials, children get to decide what they become.

And that doesn’t just invite more imagination, it can create more opportunities for children to play together, negotiate ideas, and build a shared story.

Your classroom doesn’t always need more toys. Sometimes it just needs toys that do less. #connectedclassroom #childledlearning
