And then there’s rice in someone’s shoe, sand across the classroom somehow the dramatic play area is full of dried beans, and you’re questioning every decision you’ve ever made.
Sensory play IS messy—but it doesn’t have to be chaos.
My 5 rules for making it manageable:
• Use a rug. Define the space + catch the mess.
• Less is more. Think less ball pit, more intentional play.
• Give a task. Scoop it. Sort it. Find it. Build it.
• Follow my sensory play recipe: sensory base + loose parts + task + inspiration.
• Teach the cleanup. Cleanup is part of sensory play, sweeping, wiping spills all teach real life skills and are great for fine motor development as well!
Will sensory play still be messy? Yep.
But hopefully it’s “grab the dustpan” messy… not “we need to evacuate the classroom” messy.
